Why Does My Urine Have a Strong Stinky Odor?

Remember, it has a different PH level than other parts of the body If its a problem with your vagina, try using 1 drop of tea tree oil on a Q-tip that was rinsed under clean water.

Tea tree helps rebalance your ph and has been known for curing vagina odors and yeast infections. Tea tree helps balance your bacteria. Do not use more than 2 drops Maximum! Or use a small amount of apple cider vinegar deluded in water. Move the Q-tip around carefully. Both are antiseptics and have anti-fungal and bacterial properties. It could be because your bladder is letting out small amounts of urine.

Especially when you laugh or cough and sneeze. My bet is its your bladder if you cannot smell anything abnormal when checking vaginal discharge, it may be weird but check and make sure it's not! And urine can be unpleasant when you aren't drinking enough fluids! Trust me. Where exactly should tea tree oil go? Between the outer and inner labia lips? Shaving is actually BAD for your vaginal odor and health. Hair is down there so that it can protect your 'goodies' from any bad bacteria or anything bad in general.

Shaving increases the risk of more of those bad 'things' entering your vagina. Trim if you want to keep it 'fashionable'.

Have you ever sat down on the toilet to relieve yourself and thought, Yuck, w hat's that smell? Maybe you assumed the stench was the faint yet unpleasant odor that lingers in office bathrooms It was actually your own urine.

Yep, urine can be smelly—for a number of reasons. Many of them are harmless, but in some cases, smelly urine can be a sign that something more serious is going on. We asked a doctor to explain what causes smelly urine and what you can do about it.

Hint: The five cups of coffee you had this morning aren't doing your pee any favors. Urine is a combination of water and waste products, Dr.

Dutta explains. You can check the color of your urine to confirm whether you're dehydrated. If it's amber- or honey-colored, or even a dark orange, you probably need to up your water intake. But if it's a pale straw or transparent yellow color, you're well hydrated, which means your urine could be smelly for another reason. Asparagus is notorious for making urine smelly.

But if this veggie doesn't give your pee a funky odor, that's normal, too. Dutta says everyone digests food differently, and some can get away with eating asparagus without any change in their urine. But others do have the enzyme, and when those people digest asparagus, "their bodies make something called a sulfur metabolite, which can make the urine have a sulfur or ammonia smell. Other foods, like Brussels sprouts, onions, garlic, curry, salmon, and alcohol, can have a similar effect.

Dutta suggests drinking plenty of water when eating foods that you know make your pee; it'll dilute your urine so the stench isn't so noticeable. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your coffee habit could be making your pee stink. Coffee metabolites, or the byproducts that come from coffee when it's broken down in your body, can make urine smell, Dr. Dutta says. Like we said before, this isn't the case for everyone. So if you've never noticed an odor after your morning cup of joe, you're probably in the clear.

Coffee is also a diuretic, meaning it makes you have to pee a lotflushing your body of extra fluid and sodium. Diuretics can cause dehydration, so on top of the smell from those coffee metabolites, your pee may also have a stench because it's more concentrated than usual.

Pro tip: Drink a tall glass of agua before your morning brew to fend off dehydration. A urinary tract infection UTI occurs when bacteria get into your urinary system through the urethra and then begin to multiply in the bladder. Bacteria, of course, can make your pee smell bad. But Dr. Dutta says if you have a UTI, you'll probably have more symptoms than just smelly urine.

The same bacteria can also make you have to go more frequently, give you a burning sensation when peeing, and even turn your urine cloudy or even bloody. Yeast are microorganisms that naturally live in various parts of the body, including the vagina. In this article we will cover the science behind the stench, reasons why your cat may smell of this bodily fluid and ways to combat the problem.

Once the urine soaks into an object and begins to decay, the bacterium in the pee will give off that typical, tell-tale odor. In addition, the second stage of decaying urine liquid waste is the mercaptans this is the foul smell emitted by skunks so the longer the decaying process is allowed to proceed without being cleaned up the more of the mercaptans will be produced.

The first thing you should do if your cat smells of urine is to check out its rear end. Are there matts that may be trapping the fluid? If so you will want to groom them out. You can do this yourself or enlist the help of a professional pet groomer. Watch its behavior for any changes in diet, litter box usage and general pain. If you see changes in its normal behavior, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

He or she will examine your pet and possibly take some blood work to pinpoint the cause. Once he or he has made a diagnosis, be sure to follow the care instructions to help eliminate the cause. There is the old standby of vinegar in a spray bottle to spot-spray and remove the smell. This works because vinegar is an acid that neutralizes the smell of fresh pee or the alkaline salts of old dried pee. If you have a larger area to cover you can use one part vinegar to one equal part of water. Enzyme-based cleaners are also effective in the treatment of cat pee.

These specifically made products will change the organic make up of the urine, which can then be washed or mopped away. These can be purchased at your local pet retailer or online. If your cat stinks of urine, then be sure to check her backend for matts. If this is all clear, then be sure to monitor her behavior and make an appointment with your veterinarian if needed. Evagat over a year ago. You may seem to be a hyperactive person. I guess you are also of normal or less weight but not overweight. When your adrenaline is released due to anxiety and worries, it prompts the breaking of proteins by the liver to ammino acids to give the energy ordered by the hormone.

The result is the diffusion of the amonia to outside the body through skin or bladder. This is more chronic when you form a habit of releasing the hormone due to repeated experiences of fear. One of the best thing is to accept the problem but don't fear others. Then you should avoid anxiety and stress. Try to relax when solving problems. Also avoid proteins every time. NB the amount of protein in fruits and vegetable are enough.

Drink hot water with ginger every morning before you go to work. Avoid overfeeding because it courses pressure on the bladder. The problem is not risky to your health if you live a simple no-worry-life but can be risky when you involve in hyperactive situations. Try to avoid the habit of releasing adrenaline. Do you know that most people with this situation are philosophers, creative, introspective but naive. Couldn't find what you looking for? New Reply Follow New Topic. Well, actually it mainly comes in wafts, but it really confuses me.

Could I be imagining it?You probably should, though. Today, we consider urine a market for a number of aspects of our health. In fact, strange-smelling urine can tip you off to a number of health issues. Here, doctors dish on 13 potential culprits behind your stinky pee. No surprise here, folks: Failing to drink enough water concentrates your urine, which can give it a stronger ammonia-like smell than usual, says Dr.

Bladder and urinary tract infections are common causes of smelly urine, particularly in women, who have shorter urethras than men and thus less distance for bacteria to travel to impact the bladdersays Dr.

Unfortunately, this is pretty common. Anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime—and 1 in 4 will experience multiple, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

The bacteria in our digestive tracts contributes to the smell of our stool, too. Yeast infectionswhich occur as a result of fungal overgrowth in vagina and vulva, will affect most women at some point in their lives.

According to Dr. Dune, infection-related bacteria in the vagina can come into contact with your urine while you pee—and the chemical reaction between the two can create a foul smell. Plus, many women might mistake the unusual vaginal odor created by the infection with smelly urine itself.

Coffee has a light diuretic effect, meaning it can cause your body to release water, ultimately dehydrating you and contributing to ammonia-like urine, says Dr. Plus, the metabolites aka by-products produced as your body breaks down coffee may also influence the smell of your urine, Dr. Dune adds. Nothing to be concerned about—as long as you make the effort to hydrate post latte. Yep, those pesky but normal!

Depending on how much of these foods—garlic and onions are two common culprits—you ate, you might notice changes in the smell of your urine. People who can break down the smell-inducing compounds in asparagus are called asparagus anosmic. According to research published in the British Medical Journalroughly 40 percent of people notice changes in how their pee smells after eating this veggie. In fact, B vitamins are notorious for turning urine a neon yellow-green color.

Certain STIs—particularly chlamydia and trichomoniasis —can lead to painful urination and smelly discharge in both men and women, according to the CDC. Many women might mistake the abnormal vaginal discharge associated with these sexually-transmitted infections with smelly urine, says Dr. Often caused at least partially by dehydration, kidney stones form when chemicals in your urine crystalize together.

While small stones may pass without you even noticing, larger stones can lead to pain and a slew of other symptoms, including cloudy, foul-smelling, and even bloody urine, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Those metabolites are back! Certain diabetes medications—and a drug called Methenamine, which is used to address chronic UTIs—can have this effect.

Fistulas, openings that form between two organs, often affect the bladder. According to the Urology Care Foundationfistulas of the bladder often connect the organ to either the bowel or vagina—contributing to a number of issues, including changes in urine odor.

However, gynecological and colon cancersalong with recent surgeries, can also cause fistulas. Since bladder fistulas can allow bacteria from other organs into the bladder, they often manifest as urinary tract infections, urine that looks or smells like stool, and urine that contains gas. One of the most common is maple syrup urine disease, in which a deficiency in enzymes needed to break down certain amino acids causes sweet-smelling urine, explains Dr.

Luckily, this condition is usually caught and treated in infancy. Other metabolic disorders, like phenylketonuria also known as PKUthough, can also influence urine smell. In PKU, a defective gene prevents the breakdown of the amino acid phenylalanine, which builds up and causes musty-smelling breath and urine, among other symptoms, like rashes and even seizures.

When in doubt, just get it checked out. Like what you just read? For most, peeing is such a mundane task that you do it without giving it too much thought unless, you know, you're wearing a romper— so complicated. But what if, when you sit down and relieve yourselfyou notice Whether it's extra pungent or, uh, fishy, having a weird smell emanating from down there can be freaky. But honestly, there are some perfectly logical and totally harmless causes of smelly urine odor. The number-one cause of smelly pee?

Not drinking enough water. But maybe don't wait until your toilet turns a shade of mustard yellow to start adding in some extra H2O to your diet. Instead, keep a water bottle handy at your desk, in your bag, wherever so you can drink as often as you feel like, says Dr.

The optimal amount of water each day, btw: eight glasses. Quick Q: Have you ever eaten asparagus and noticed that your urine smelled You're not alone: 40 percent of people can actually smell a difference in their pee after eating asparagus, according to a study in the British Medical Journal according to this article, it's actually called asparagus anosmia, and it's due to genetic variations in smell, not the pee itself.

But asparagus isn't the only food that can change the scent of your urine. A high-salt diet can also make your urine more concentrated, giving it a stronger scent than what you may be used to.

What Causes Abnormal Urine Odor?

But if too much salt is the cause of your smelly urine, you might have bigger problems. Some research has linked high-salt diets with stomach ulcers and infections, and an excess of salt can also keep you dehydrated because sodium draws water out of your cells and into your blood in an effort to dilute the salt in your blood.

Some people "may notice an interesting odor when they've consumed coffee," says Adam Ramin, MD, a urologist and medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles. That smelly urine odor is due to coffee metabolites a. Couple that with the fact that coffee is a diuretic and you could have dehydrated read: more concentrated pee that's already smelly, along with these metabolites. So, if it happens regularly after drinking a cup of Joe, it's really NBD.

The most common medically concerning reason for smelly pee in women is a urinary tract infection UTIaccording to Dr. In fact, pee that has a strong ammonia smell, or foul, or slightly sweet-smelling urine is often the first indication that you have a UTI.

Basically, the strange urine odor is the bacteria's fault because bacteria is what causes UTIs in the first place. That bacteria is also what makes your urine appear cloudy or bloody and gives you that telltale burning while peeing sensation, according to the Office on Women's Health OWH.

If you suspect a UTI, talk to your doctor immediately so you can get started on an antibiotic. Even after you finish those antibiotics, keep a vigilant eye or.
