Brilliant but also shy and indecisive, he is torn between two women.Yi is most well known for his novel The Heartlesssometimes described as the first Korean novel.
Yi was born in in Chongju. He was orphaned at about age 10 and grew up with Donghak believers. Inaround the time of the Donghak Peasant Revolutionhe moved to Seoul in order to avoid the authorities. In he went to Japan for his education.
Upon returning to Korea inhe taught, in Jeongju, at Osan School. He later moved back to Tokyo and became one of the leaders of the anti-colonial student movement. Inhe moved to Shanghai and served in the Korean Provisional Government and became president of The Independenta newspaper in Shanghai. Yi returned to Korea in and founded the Alliance for Self-Improvement, established on principles of enlightenment and self-help.
From toYi pursued a career in journalism working for several newspapers, including two that survive today, the Dong-a Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo. After the war, the Special Committee for the Investigation of Anti-nationalist Activities found Yi guilty of collaboration. In Yi was captured by the North Korean army and died in Manpo on October 25, most likely of tuberculosis.
Yi was a fiction writer and essayist. His essays originally focused on the need for national consciousness. The Heartless was a description of the crossroads at which Korea found itself, stranded between tradition and modernity and undergoing conflict between social realities and traditional ideals. The first period That of The Heartlessfrom featured a strong attack on Korea's traditional society and the belief that Korea should adopt a more modern "western" worldview.
This was also the period in which, as noted above, Yi became a Japanese collaborator. Yi's professional judgment could be as fickle as his politics. In one famous case he befriended then abandoned Korean "New Woman" writer Kim Myeong-sun arguably because his own beliefs about modernism had shifted. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikimedia Commons has media related to Yi Kwang-su.Cornell East Asia Series, Yi Kwang-su had been a man of letters more than a writer of fiction, probably the most distinguished, if controversial, Korean man of letters from the mids through the s.
During these years he not only produced a stream of full-length novels and short stories but also a large number of newspaper columns and powerfully argued provocative essays on some of the most critical issues of his time, such as the custom of early and arranged marriage, filial obligations, the place and rights of women in family and society, and the need for educational reform.
It may indeed be the case that his writings on these issues were far more important than the body of his fiction, even though he has often been called the father of the modern Korean novel. For older Korean readers and those interested in modern Korean literature, this would not be a problematic question, since they would want to read it, if they have not already done so, if only for its historical significance.
But what about younger Korean readers as well as those reading it in translation? I raise this question because of a response I got from a young Korean American friend when I asked him what he thought of the novel in its English translation. I was dismayed to hear him compare the novel to the daytime American soaps. I no longer felt the rush of excitement I once experienced when I first read it as a young boy, and even though I enjoyed rereading it, I was also annoyed by its sentimentality.
Although he mostly succeedsit is also clear how tentative he must have been, because we see him now and then slipping back to the manner of the earlier oral narrative style, as though he were delivering an oral recitation rather than a written narrative. The narrative, too, is organized on a contrast between the old and the new.
More significantly, these contrasting narrative details help to bring into focus the central theme of the novel, the stumbling beginnings of a new world and new consciousness gradually emerging out of the old world and old ways of thinking. This is why, as has been pointed out by Prof. In the emerging new world, the lives of women are not to be dedicated to fulfilling their traditional filial and spousal obligations. Their greatest obligation is to themselves, to live and grow according to their own wishes and potential.
But the glimpses of the emerging new world and its new awareness, which make up the second half of the novel, are not free of the dark shadows of the first half of the novel. An emerging new awareness about the proper relationship between children and parents and man and woman, built on individual freedom and equality, turns out to be no more than an ideal still to be achieved.
A marriage arranged for and finalized by parents has neither personal nor moral validity. In order for it to be valid, it has to be entered into by the willing consent and desires of the man and woman directly involved.

I really enjoyed it. It gave me a great taste of Iceland and took away all the hassle of searching for tours and accommodation which is important for me because I have limited free time since I work 80-100 hour weeks. It took me to places in Iceland I may not have considered if I booked on my own. Even though we travel to Europe at least a couple of times a year and do it indepently (find our own accomodation, etc. Iceland's reputation of being very expensive concerned us too. We pinpointed the potential travel time as early September (2012), during the summer, we started to search more intensely.
Tried to compare and understand the kinds and details of services offered by a number of different operators. Self-drive tours appealed to us since we would be still independent but especially accommodations would be arranged for us.
Small towns with potentially limited accomodations and the distance in between did not give a comfort level for arranging our own accomodations. Also the coverage and duration of their tours appealed to us. After exchanging a few e-mails with some questions, which were promptly answered, decided to phone them directly to expedite the process. The phone response was efficient (Manuella), friendly, informative and spoke to the quality of the service we may potentially be getting from this agency.
Due to being 6 hour behind Iceland (Western Canada) some of the phone calls coincided with the end of the work day in Iceland but Manuella did not mind and give as much info. Our choice was made and it was the FULL CIRCLE tour of Iceland. We chose the budget accommodations and the economy car options.
It was within our budget and was going to give a fairly good view of Iceland. We decided to fly to Reykjavik first and spend four days there. Manuella confirmed that upon our arrival, if we contact Nordic Visito orlandojlferreira, Netherlands Iceland Full Circle, August 2012 The perfect way to discover one of the last unspoiled countries in Europe.
For several years now Iceland has been on the top of our travelling plans.
We set ourselves quite an ambitious task, also considering that we were travelling with our 4 year old son. We decided to do the full circle tour around the island in just over 2 weeks and I have to say we were not at all disappointed. Not only did the island exceed our expectations, but also the quality of the organisation was excellent. The choice of hotels was carefully made by our travel agent to ensure our son would have plenty to do, while not compromising on the highlights.
All the activities were also well planned and the information provided by our travel agent was accurate, detailed and useful. The agency was also very quick in action when required. You can easily do this using curl. The option -H lets curl set the content type header while the option -X sets the http method.
You will get the access token and the refresh token.
Google Drive example:Select the option to create source from Google Drive: Allow BigML access to your Google Drive: Get the access token and refresh token: After complete these steps you need to POST to the source endpoint URL an object containing at least the file ID (for Google Drive) or the bucket and the file name (for Google Storage) and the access token.
Including also the refresh token is optional before your access token expires. Including it avoids you to be worried about expiration time. You first need to authorize BigML access from your own Google Apps application.
After the authorization process you will get your access token and refresh token from the Google Authorization Server. Then the process is the same as creating a remote source using BigML application described above. You need to POST to the source endpoint an object containing at least the file ID (for Google Drive) or the bucket and the file name (for Google Storage) and the access token, but in this case you will also need to include the app secret and app client from your App.
Again, including the refresh token is optional. Your values for app client and app secret appear as Client secret and Client ID in Google developers console respectively. This way is specially useful if you want to model small amounts of data generated by an application.
It can be compressed, gzipped, or zipped. You can also use curl to customize your new source with a name and different parser. For example, to create a new source named "my source", without a header and with "x" as the only missing token. However, if you do specify it, BigML. While the handling of numeric, categorical, or items fields within a decision tree framework is fairly straightforward, the handling of text fields can be done in a number of different ways.
At the source level, BigML. In the near future, BigML. For text fields, BigML. If all is selected, then both full terms and tokenized terms are used.
For example, datasets containing all products bought by users or prescription datasets where each patient is associated to different treatments. These datasets are commonly used for Association Discovery to find relationships between different items. Once a field has been detected as items, BigML tries to automatically detect which is the best separator for your items. During the source pre-scan BigML tries to determine the data type of each field in your file. For instance, if a field named "date" has been identified as a datetime with format "YYYY-MM-dd", four new fields will be automatically added to the source, namely "date.
For each row, these new fields will be filled in automatically by parsing the value of their parent field, "date". For example, if the latter contains the value "1969-07-14", the autogenerated columns in that row will have the values 1969, 7, 14 and 1 (because that day was Monday). When a field is detected as datetime, BigML tries to determine its format for parsing the values and generate the fields with their components.
By default, BigML accepts ISO 8601 time formats (YYYY-MM-DD) as well as a number of other common European and US formats, as seen in the table below: It might happen that BigML is not able to determine the right format of your datetime field.
In that case, it will be considered either a text or a categorical field. Once a source has been successfully created it will have the following properties. It specifies the total number of fields, the current offset, and limit, and the number of fields (count) returned. In a future version, you will be able to share sources with other co-workers or, if desired, make them publicly available.
It includes a code, a message, and some extra information. See the table below. This is the date and time in which the source was updated with microsecond precision.
